102 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Muḥammad ibn Isḥāq al-Thaqafī related to me, from Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥawārī, who said: I heard Abū Sulaymān—meaning al-Dārānī—say, “I know no fixed limit for contentment, no fixed limit for asceticism, and no fixed limit for scrupulous piety; all I know of each is the path that leads to it.” Aḥmad continues: “I then reported this to his son Sulaymān, who replied, ‘Yet I do know the limit: whoever is content in every matter has reached the limit of contentment; whoever renounces in every matter has reached the limit of asceticism; and whoever exercises caution in every matter has reached the limit of scrupulous piety.’”
