98 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Asad ibn ʿAmmār al-Taymī narrated to me; he said: Saʿīd ibn ʿĀmir narrated to us, from Juwayriyyah ibn Asmāʾ, from Nāfiʿ, who said:
A son of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar fell ill, and Ibn ʿUmar’s grief for him grew so intense that some of those present said, “We fear that this old man might himself suffer some harm because of the boy.” When the child died, Ibn ʿUmar attended his funeral, and no one showed more composure and even cheer than he did. He was asked about this, and Ibn ʿUmar replied, “It was only a mercy for him; so once Allah’s decree had come to pass, we were content with it.”
