84 – al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Ishāq ibn Ismāʿīl and Aḥmad ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; they said: Ismāʿīl ibn Ibrāhīm narrated to us; he said: Ziyād ibn Abī Ḥassān informed me that he was present when ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz buried his son ʿAbd al-Malik.

When the grave had been leveled with the ground and they had placed inside it two pieces of olive wood—one at his head and the other at his feet—then positioned the grave between him and the qiblah, ʿUmar stood upright while the people gathered around him and said:

“May Allah have mercy on you, my dear son. You were a dutiful child to your father, and from the moment Allah granted you to me I have rejoiced in you. By Allah, never have I been happier, nor more hopeful of my own share with Allah on your account, than I am now that I have laid you in the place to which Allah has conveyed you. So may Allah show you mercy, forgive your sin, reward you for the best of your deeds, overlook the worst of them, and show mercy to every intercessor who speaks well of you—whether present or absent. We are content with Allah’s decree and we submit to His command. All praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds.”

He then departed.
