Al-Rida 'an Allah bi-Qada'ihIbn Abi al-Dunya

78 – al-Husayn narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; he said: Ishaq ibn Ismaʿil narrated to us; he said: Wakiʿ narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Abu Hayyan al-Taymi, who said:

They visited Suwayd ibn Mathʿaba—one of the most distinguished companions of ʿAbd Allah—and his family were saying to him, “May our lives be your ransom! Shall we not bring you something to eat? Shall we not give you something to drink?” He answered them in a faint voice:

“The flesh of my sides has been rubbed raw and the time spent lying here has grown long. By Allah, I would not wish that Allah reduced any part of this for me, not even by the amount of a fingernail clipping.”
