78 – ʿAbd al-Rahmān, the nephew of al-Aṣmaʿī, recited to me—quoting his uncle—a poem by Kaʿb ibn Saʿd al-Ghanawī:
Forbearing he stands, whenever forbearance ennobles its folk;
yet even in meekness he looms formidable in the enemy’s eye.
At the mere sight of him, men measure their words—
no shameful speech is voiced while he is near.
