Al-HilmIbn Abi al-Dunya

66 – Muḥammad ibn ʿAbbād al-Makkī narrated to us; Sufyān ibn ʿUyaynah transmitted; he said: I heard Ibn Shubruma say: “How familiar I am with fine poetry, as in the lines that run:

[in the al-ṭawīl metre]
Those are a people who, whenever they build, they perfect the building;
when they make a pact, they keep it faithful, and when they bind a covenant, they bind it tight.

Whenever bounty comes to them, they repay it in kind;
and when they themselves bestow a favor, they neither sully it nor make it onerous.

Should their leader, faced with the gravest emergency, say,
‘Hold back—let the surplus of your forbearance hold back,’ they do as he bids.”
