42 – Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad al-Marwazī told me that he had been informed by Hishām ibn Yūsuf, who related on the authority of Umayya ibn Shibl. Umayya said: “I came to Sinān ibn Laqīṭ—the client of ʿUrwa ibn Muḥammad, the governor appointed by ʿUmar ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz. He had lived long enough to meet the elders, so I sought his counsel on a certain matter. He said to me: ‘If the only way you can wound your enemy is by something that breaches your own religion, then you have begun by harming yourself.’”
