33 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Azdī related to me, from one of his own teachers, who said: Muʿāwiyah remarked,
“O Banu Umayyah, match Quraysh with forbearance. By Allah, in the pre-Islamic days I would meet a man who poured insults upon me while I poured clemency upon him; I would then leave him as a friend—if I sought his help, he would hasten to assist me, and if I rallied him, he would rally alongside me. Forbearance has never stripped an honorable man of his honor; it only adds to his dignity.”
