Al-HilmIbn Abi al-Dunya

17 – ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Azdi narrated to me; Yazīd ibn Hārūn narrated to us, from Ḥammād ibn Salama, from Abū Jaʿfar al-Ḥaṭamī, who related that his grandfather ʿUmayr—who was a Companion—advised his sons: “My children, beware of keeping company with the foolish, for sharing their company is disgraceful. Whoever remains forbearing toward a fool will find joy in his forbearance, while whoever answers him back will come to regret it. Whoever endures what he dislikes will attain what he loves. And if any of you intends to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, let him steel himself to endure harm and place his trust in the reward from Allah; for whoever is confident of the reward feels no sting from the harm.”
