126 – ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Hafs al-Qurashi narrated to us; Dharr ibn Mujashiʿ transmitted from Ghalib al-Qattan, from Malik ibn Dinar, from al-Ahnaf ibn Qays, who said:
ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab said: “Whoever laughs a great deal forfeits his gravitas; whoever jokes is treated lightly; whoever overdoes anything becomes known for it; whoever speaks at length will often slip; whoever slips often loses his modesty; whoever loses his modesty diminishes his scrupulousness; whoever diminishes his scrupulousness diminishes his share of goodness. Whoever eats to excess will taste no sweetness in the remembrance of Allah; whoever sleeps to excess will find no blessing in his lifespan; and whoever busies his tongue with speaking about people has his standing fall in Allah’s sight and leaves this world ⦗1⦘ devoid of uprightness.”
