Al-HilmIbn Abi al-Dunya

121 – ʿAbbas ibn al-Walid ibn Yazid said: My father related to us, and al-Awzaʿi narrated, saying: I heard Yahya ibn Abi Kathir say:

“On the Day of Resurrection it will be said to a servant, ‘Go to so-and-so and take the right that is yours from him.’ He will answer, ‘My Lord, I do not know of any right I have over him.’ He will be told, ‘Yes you do—on such-and-such a day he mentioned you with such-and-such words, and on another day he mentioned you with such-and-such words.’ ”

Al-Awzaʿi then remarked, “Can a person who, tomorrow, will have to pay out of his own good deeds while he watches in abject humiliation—wishing there were a vast distance between him and his closest companions—really be said to have acted wisely for his own soul?”
