117 – Abu Hudhayfah al-Fazari related to us, from his father, who said that Asmaʿ ibn Kharijah remarked: “I have never reviled anyone, for the person who reviles me is one of two men. If he is a man of honor, then it was merely a lapse and a slip, and I have a greater right to pardon it and to earn the merit of doing so. If he is a base man, I would never subject my reputation….” He would then recite:
I pardon the fault of the noble, storing the favor away,
and I turn from the abuse of the ignoble, out of nobility.
