110 – Al-Walid ibn Shujaʿ al-Sakuni narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Rahim ibn Sulayman ⦗70⦘ related from Israʾil ibn Yunus, from ʿAbd al-Aʿla, from Saʿid ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbas:

“A man insulted one of al-ʿAbbas’s forefathers—an ancestor whom, in the pre-Islamic days of ignorance, people used to slap. Al-ʿAbbas’s clan said, ‘By Allah, we will slap him just as he was slapped,’ and they even took up their weapons. News of this reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he mounted the pulpit and declared, ‘People! Do you know who is the most honoured in the sight of Allah?’ They answered, ‘You are.’ He said, ‘Al-ʿAbbas is from me, and I ⦗71⦘ am from him. Do not revile our dead, lest you harm our living.’ The people then came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, we seek refuge with Allah from your anger; so ask forgiveness for us.’”
