ʿAbd al-Jabbār ibn al-ʿAlāʾ al-Makkī narrated to us: Sufyān narrated to us, from ʿAmr ibn Dīnār, who said: Tāwūs informed us: I heard Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, relate that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Adam and Moses, peace be upon them both, disputed. Moses said, ‘Adam, you are our father, yet you let us down and caused us to leave Paradise.’ Adam replied, ‘Moses, Allah chose you to speak to you and wrote the Torah for you with His hand. Do you blame me for something Allah decreed for me forty years before He created me?’” He said, “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument, peace be upon them both.”
