Muhammad ibn Yahyā narrated to us: Abū al-Nu‘mān narrated to us: Mahdī ibn Maymūn narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Sīrīn narrated to me, from Abū Hurayrah, from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said:
“Adam and Moses—peace be upon them both—met. Moses said to him, ‘You are the one who brought misery upon people and caused them to leave Paradise.’
“Adam said to Moses—peace be upon them both—‘Are you the one whom Allah chose to convey His messages, whom He chose for Himself, and to whom He revealed the Torah?’
“He replied, ‘Yes.’
“Adam said, ‘Did you find that He had written this for me before He created me?’
“He replied, ‘Yes.’”
The Prophet said, “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument—peace be upon them both,” three times.
That is, he repeated this statement three times.
