ʿAbd Allāh ibn Muhammad al-Zuhrī narrated to us, saying: Sufyān narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Zinād narrated to us, from al-Aʿraj, from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Adam and Moses disputed—peace be upon them both. Moses said: ‘Adam, you are our father, yet you disappointed us and caused us to be expelled from Paradise.’
“Adam replied: ‘Moses, Allah chose you to speak to you and wrote the Torah for you with His hand. Do you blame me for something Allah decreed for me forty years before He created me?’ Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument; Adam prevailed over Moses in argument—peace be upon them both.”
⦗121⦘ ʿAmr ibn ʿAlī narrated to us, saying: Al-Muʿtamir narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, from Abū Salamah ⦗122⦘, from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Adam and Moses disputed—peace be upon them both.” ʿAmr then related the hadith.
ʿAmr narrated to us, saying: Yahyā ibn Saʿīd narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us, saying: Abū Salamah narrated to us, from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: “The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said”—and ʿAmr ibn Murrah narrated the hadith to us.
⦗123⦘ Yahyā ibn Hakīm also narrated to us, saying: ʿAbd al-Wahhāb narrated to us, saying: Muhammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us. He then related the hadith in similar wording.
Ahmad ibn Thābit al-Jahdarī narrated to us, saying: Safwān—meaning Ibn ʿĪsā—narrated to us, saying: Al-Hārith ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān narrated to us, saying: Yazīd ibn Hurmuz informed me, from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Adam and Moses disputed—peace be upon them both. Moses said: ‘You are Adam, whom Allah created with His hand.’”
He then related the hadith in full. I have dictated it in The Book of Divine Decree.
⦗124⦘ Ahmad ibn Thābit narrated to us, saying: Safwān narrated to us, from al-Hārith, who said: ʿAbd al-Rahmān ibn Hurmuz al-Aʿraj informed me, from Abū Hurayrah, of this same hadith, without adding or omitting anything.
Muhammad ibn Bashshār and Abū Mūsā narrated to us, both saying: Yahyā narrated to us. Bundār said: “Muhammad ibn ʿAmr narrated to us,” whereas Abū Mūsā said: “From Muhammad ibn ʿAmr,” who said: Abū Salamah narrated to us, from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Adam and Moses disputed. Moses said to him: ‘You are Adam, whom Allah created with His hand, into whom He breathed of His spirit, and whom He settled in His Paradise.’”
He then related the hadith in full.
Yūsuf ibn Mūsā narrated to us, saying: Jarīr narrated to us, from al-Aʿmash, from Abū ⦗125⦘ Sālih, from Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Adam and Moses disputed. Moses said: ‘Adam, Allah created you with His hand and breathed into you of His spirit.’”
He then related the hadith in full.
Muhammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us, saying: Yahyā ibn Hammād narrated to us, saying: Abū ʿAwānah narrated to us, from Sulaymān—that is, al-Aʿmash—a similar report through this chain of transmission.
Abū Bakr said: I have dictated this chapter in its entirety in The Book of Divine Decree.
Abū Bakr said: Thus Moses, to whom Allah spoke, addressed Adam—peace be upon them both—stating that Allah had created him with His hand and breathed into him of His spirit. This accords with what is preserved between the two covers of the Quran, in which Allah, Majestic and Exalted, informs His believing servants that He created Adam, peace be upon him, with His hand.
