11 — Chapter: Evidence from the Sunnah of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, Affirming the Hand of Allah, Glorious and Exalted, in Agreement with What We Have Recited from Our Lord’s Revelation, Not in Contradiction to It
Allah has exalted His Prophet’s rank and standing, placing him above saying anything contrary to the revelation Allah sent down to him.
Ahmad ibn ʿAbdah al-Dabbī narrated to us, saying: Hammād ibn Zayd narrated to us, from Matar al-Warrāq, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn Buraydah, from Yahyā ibn Yaʿmar, who said: “When Maʿbad al-Juhanī spoke about divine decree . . .” He then related the hadith in full. I have dictated it in The Book of Faith. The report includes the following:
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar said: ʿUmar ibn al-Khattāb narrated to me that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Adam and Moses met. Moses said: ‘You are the one whom Allah created ⦗120⦘ with His hand, before whom He made His angels prostrate, and into whom He breathed of His spirit. He gave you His command, but you disobeyed Him and caused us to be expelled from Paradise.’
“Adam replied: ‘Allah gave you the Torah. Did you find in it that the sin had been decreed for me before I committed it?’
“He said: ‘Yes.’”
He said: “Thus Adam prevailed over Moses in argument; Adam prevailed over Moses in argument—peace be upon them both.”
