ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Hakam ibn Abī Ziyād al-Qatawānī narrated to us. He said: Muhammad—meaning Ibn ʿUbayd—narrated to us. He said: Muhammad ibn Ishāq narrated to us, from Yazīd ibn Abī Habīb, from Nāʿim, the freedman of Umm Salamah, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr. He said:
We performed Hajj with him. When we were somewhere along the road to Mecca, I saw him head towards a tree—something was laid out for him—and sit beneath it. Then he said:
“I saw the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, beneath this tree when a man approached from this ravine. He greeted ⦗39⦘ the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, then said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I wish to undertake jihad with you, seeking thereby the Face of Allah and the abode of the Hereafter.’
“He asked, ‘Is either of your parents still alive?’
“The man replied, ‘Yes, O Messenger of Allah, both of them.’
“He said, ‘Go back and be dutiful to your parents.’”
He said: So the man turned back the way he had come.
