Bishr ibn Khālid al-ʿAskarī narrated to us. He said: Muhammad narrated to us, from Shuʿbah, from Sulaymān—that is, al-Aʿmash—who said: I heard Abū Wāʾil say: ʿAbdullāh said:

The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, made a distribution, and a man said, “This is certainly a distribution in which the Face of Allah was not sought.” I went to the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and mentioned this to him, and his face reddened.

Shuʿbah said: I think he said, “And he became angry, until I wished I had not told him.”

Shuʿbah said: I believe he said, “May Allah have mercy on us and on Moses”—Shuʿbah was uncertain about the words “May Allah have mercy on us and on Moses”—“he suffered greater harm than this, yet remained patient.”

Abū Bakr said: I have already dictated the chains of transmission of this hadith in the chapter on the ruler’s patience with the harm caused by his subjects.
