73 – Al-Hasan ibn ʿArafah narrated to us; ʿAli ibn Thabit reported; from Hisham ibn Saʿd, who said:
“During the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, ʿAbd Allah ibn Himar would buy a small skin-bag of clarified butter, or a skin-bag of honey, or whatever else was in the market. He would bring it to the Prophet ﷺ and say, ‘I have presented this to you as a gift, O Messenger of Allah.’ Later, when the owner came seeking its price, he would bring him to the Prophet ﷺ and say, ‘Give this man the price of his goods.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would remark, ‘Did you not just give it to me as a gift?’—then he would laugh and order that the owner be paid.
He was repeatedly brought for drinking wine during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and the Prophet would command that he be lashed. On one occasion he was brought after having drunk, and a man among the gathering said, ‘O Allah, curse him—how often he is brought!’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ replied, ‘Do not revile him; he loves Allah and His Messenger.’”
