66 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad ibn Khalaf ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Taymī wrote to me that Isḥāq ibn Abī Nabātah, a member of the clan of ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd ibn Zayd Manāh ibn Tamīm, served as the mu’adhdhin for his people in the Mosque of Banū ʿAmr ibn Saʿd for sixty years. He also taught the boys to read and write without taking any wage. He died thirty years before the trench was dug. When the trench was later excavated and cut through the graveyard, some of his companions went to recover his body; his grave had fallen into the trench. They exhumed him exactly as he had been buried—nothing about him had altered except that the shroud had dried and stiffened, while the burial perfume (ḥanūṭ) still lay upon him and remained fragrant. They found his face uncovered and could still see the henna on the tips of his beard. Al-Musayyab ibn Zuhayr then went to Abū Jaʿfar, who was in the palace of Umm Mūsā bint Hishām ibn ʿAbd al-Malik on the bank of the Euphrates, and informed him. Abū Jaʿfar rode out during the night until he saw the body; he then ordered that it be re-interred that same night so the people would not fall into temptation.
