6 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us. Muḥammad ibn Sahl al-Tamīmī reported to us that Ibn Abī Maryam narrated to us, saying: Nāfiʿ ibn Yazīd, from ʿAyyāsh ibn ʿAbbās, from ʿĪsā ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from Zayd ibn Aslam, from his father, from ʿUmar—may Allah be pleased with him—said:
He entered the mosque and found Muʿādh ibn Jabal weeping beside the grave of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He asked, “What makes you weep, Muʿādh?” Muʿādh answered, “A ḥadīth I heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said:
‘Even the slightest ostentation is polytheism. Allah loves the devout, hidden, upright servants—those who, when absent, are not missed and, when present, are not recognised. Their hearts are lamps of guidance; they emerge unscathed from every dusty darkness.’”
