Al-Awliya'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

52 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Ziyād ibn Ayyūb mentioned, and Aḥmad ibn Abī al-Ḥawārī related to us, and Yaḥyā ibn aṣ-Ṣāmit related, saying: I heard ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿUmayr say:

“A man afflicted with leprosy was living among the deserted ruins of the tribes in Egypt. A young man from the city would visit him regularly, tend to him, and wash his rags. One day another Egyptian youth happened to come along and said to the one who served him, ‘I have been told that this man knows the Greatest Name of Allah, and I would like to go to him.’

“When he reached the leper, the youth greeted him and said, ‘Uncle, you are said to know the Greatest Name of Allah. Why not ask Him to remove what has befallen you?’

“He replied, ‘My nephew, it is He who has tested me with this, and I would hate to send it back to Him.’”
