121 – ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Muhammad ibn Marzūq transmitted; Yaḥyā ibn al-Faḍl al-Khurqī reported; ʿAbbād ibn Wāqid—also known as ʿUbayd—said: “I once set out for the pilgrimage. On the way I came upon a man, and standing before him was a boy, the most handsome and lively youngster I had ever seen. I asked, ‘Who is this?’ He replied, ‘My son, and I shall tell you his story. I previously left for the hajj with this boy’s mother while she was pregnant with him. When we reached one of the way-stations, labor pains struck her; she gave birth to him and died. The caravan was about to move on, so I wrapped the infant in a piece of cloth, placed him in a cave, built stones around the entrance, and departed, convinced he would die at once. I completed the pilgrimage and returned. When we reached that same spot, my companion hurried to the cave and removed the stones, and there was the child, sucking his thumb. We looked and saw milk flowing from it. I lifted him up and took him with me—and here he is before you now.”
