Al-Awliya'Ibn Abi al-Dunya

10 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Muhammad ibn Idrīs reported to us; al-Muʿallā ibn ʿĪsā passed it on; Nahshal ibn Saʿīd al-Qushayrī transmitted it from al-Ḍaḥḥāk ibn Muzāḥim al-Hilālī, from Ibn ʿAbbās—traced back to the Prophet—who said:

“Three qualities, whoever possesses them becomes deserving of Allah’s patronage and obedient service:

  1. an ingrained forbearance that fends off the foolishness of the ignorant from himself;
  2. a genuine scrupulousness that restrains him from disobeying Allah; and
  3. a good disposition through which he deals kindly with people.”
