100 – ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥusayn reported; Hishām ibn ʿUbayd Allāh al-Rāzī narrated to us; Yahyā ibn al-ʿAlāʾ, from Zayd ibn Aslam, who said:

“There was a man among the Children of Israel who had withdrawn from people, living alone in a mountain cave. Whenever drought struck the people of his day, they would beseech him for help; he would pray to Allah and He would send them rain. One day they came to him on account of some need and found him seated, a stick in his hand with which he was turning over the skulls and bones of the dead. They sat down to wait, reluctant to interrupt him at what he was doing. When they were alone with him, he suddenly let out a loud cry and collapsed. They waited, then came closer, and found that he had died.

“They were greatly astonished. The Children of Israel gathered around him and began the preparations for his burial. While they were thus engaged, behold—a couch descended, fluttering down from the heights of the sky until it reached him. A man from among the Children of Israel stood up and said, ‘Praise be to Allah who has singled him out with what I have just witnessed.’ He lifted the body and placed it on the couch. The couch then rose, before the people’s very eyes, into the air until it disappeared from sight. One of their scholars exclaimed, ‘Glory be to You! How greatly You honor the believer!’”
