- ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī reported; Aḥmad ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿIyāḍ al-Qurashī reported; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Kāmil al-Qarqasanī reported; ʿUlwān ibn Dāwūd transmitted from ʿAlī ibn Zayd, who said:
Tāwūs said: “While I was in Mecca, al-Ḥajjāj sent for me. He seated me beside him and leaned me against a cushion. Suddenly he heard a pilgrim circling the Kaʿbah, raising his voice with the talbiyah. Al-Ḥajjāj said, ‘Bring that man to me.’ When the man was brought, he asked, ‘Of what people are you?’ He answered, ‘I am one of the Muslims.’ Al-Ḥajjāj said, ‘I did not ask you about Islam.’ The man replied, ‘Then about what did you ask?’ He said, ‘I asked you about your homeland.’ The man said, ‘I am from Yemen.’
‘How did you leave Muḥammad ibn Yūsuf’—meaning his brother—‘behind you?’ The man replied, ‘I left him imposing, stout, splendidly dressed, riding fine mounts, forever going out and coming in.’ Al-Ḥajjāj said, ‘I did not ask you about that.’ The man said, ‘Then about what did you ask?’ He replied, ‘I asked you about his conduct.’ The man said, ‘I left him an unjust, high-handed tyrant—obedient to the creature, disobedient to the Creator.’
Al-Ḥajjāj said, ‘What made you speak such words when you know his standing with me?’ The man said, ‘Do you imagine ⦗37⦘ that because of his standing with you he is dearer to me than my standing with Allah, while I am a guest at His House, affirming His Prophet, and fulfilling the duty He imposed?’ Al-Ḥajjāj fell silent and gave him no reply. The man rose—without permission—and left.
Tāwūs continued: I got up and followed him, saying, ‘What a wise man!’ He went to the Kaʿbah, clung to its curtains, and said: ‘O Allah, in You I seek refuge and to You I flee. O Allah, let my anxious yearning for Your generosity and my contentment with Your guarantee spare me the deprivation meted out by the stingy and give me independence from what the grasping hoard. O Allah, (grant me) Your near relief, Your ancient favor, and Your customary kindness.’
Then he melted into the crowd. I saw him on the afternoon of ʿArafah saying, ‘O Allah, if You have not accepted my pilgrimage, my toil, and my hardship, then do not withhold from me the reward for my affliction through Your refusal to accept from me.’ He again vanished among the people, and I saw him at dawn in Muzdalifah saying, ‘What a shame before You—by Allah, even if You forgive!’—repeating it over and over.
