84 – ʿAbdullāh narrated to us; Abu Bakr ibn Isḥāq narrated to us; Muḥammad ibn Ḥumayd narrated to us; Mehrān narrated to us, from Sufyān, who said:

“Wāṣil once recited the verse, ‘And in the heaven is your provision and that which you are promised’ (Qur’an 51:22). He commented, ‘I read that my provision is in the heaven, yet I go on seeking it on the earth!’ He therefore entered a deserted ruin to devote himself to worship, and every day a basketful of fresh dates would be sent down to him. When he passed away, his brother came in and took his place there.”
