Al-IkhwanIbn Abi al-Dunya

Al-Husayn ibn Abd al-Rahmān related to us that one of the poets said to a brother of his:

[Tawīl meter]

“By Him who, had He willed, would not have created parting:
Though absent from my sight, you are never absent from my heart.

My brother, may Allah watch over you wherever you may turn,
In every direction, from the East unto the West.

Longing conjures up your image until it seems
That I converse with you nearby, though you are not near me.

I keep anxious watch, lest even the merest mote should touch you;
At the thought, imagine my heart grown wings of dread.

Perhaps—just perhaps—Allah will keep veiled
Whatever grievous anguish the divine decrees may hold.”
