52 — Al-Hasan ibn al-Sabbāh al-Bazzār narrated to me, saying: Ishāq ibn al-Buhlūl al-Tanūkhī narrated to me, saying: Abāya ibn Kulayb narrated to us, saying:
“Muhammad ibn al-Nadr al-Hārithī, Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak, Fudayl ibn Iyād, and I once gathered together, and I prepared food for them. Muhammad ibn al-Nadr al-Hārithī did not disagree with us about anything, so Abd Allāh ibn al-Mubārak said to him, ‘How seldom you disagree!’ Muhammad replied:
[Meter: al-Ramal]
When choosing companions, choose one endowed
With modesty, chastity, and generosity.
If you say ‘No,’ he says ‘No’ to the matter;
And if you say ‘Yes,’ he answers, ‘Yes.’”
٥٢ - حَدَّثَنِي الْحَسَنُ بْنُ الصَّبَّاحِ الْبَزَّارُ، حَدَّثَنِي إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ الْبُهْلُولِ التَّنُوخِيُّ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا عَبَاءَةَ بْنُ كُلَيْبٍ، قَالَ: " اجْتَمَعْتُ أَنَا وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْحَارِثِيُّ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ، وَفُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ، وَصَنَعْتُ لَهُمْ طَعَامًا، فَلَمْ يُخَالِفْ عَلَيْنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ النَّضْرِ الْحَارِثِيُّ فِي شَيْءٍ فَقَالَ لَهُ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ: مَا أَقَلَّ خِلَافَكَ، فَقَالَ مُحَمَّدٌ:
[البحر الرمل]
فَإِذَا صَاحَبْتَ فَاصْحَبْ صَاحِبًا ... ذَا حَيَاءٍ وَعَفَافٍ وَكَرَمْ
قَوْلُهُ لِلشَّيْءِ لَا إِنْ قُلْتَ لَا ... وَإِذَا قُلْتَ: نَعَمْ قَالَ: نَعَمْ
