Al-IkhwanIbn Abi al-Dunya

47 — ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Sālih narrated to us: Ibrāhīm ibn Hirāsah narrated to me, from al-Muhallab ibn ‘Uthmān, from ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn ‘Amr al-Awzā‘ī, who said: ‘Umar ibn al-Khattāb (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

“Choose your friends according to their piety. Offer your conversation freely only to one who desires it, and lay your need only before one who would gladly fulfil it. Consider the living fortunate only for what would cause you to consider the dead fortunate, and consult concerning your affairs those who fear Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”
