Al-IkhwanIbn Abi al-Dunya

33 — Abd al-Rahmān ibn Sālih narrated to us: Abū Bahr, a companion of Yahyā ibn Ādam, narrated to me, saying: “Sufyān al-Thawrī used to recite:

[The Kāmil meter]

Test men well before you seek their brotherhood;
Discern their ways and scrutinize their conduct.

When you find a brother trustworthy and devout,
Cling to him with both hands, your heart content.

Forsake self-abasement and obsequiousness
To win the favor of one who spurns you when you draw near.”
