227 — Abdullah ibn Muhammad al-Makkī narrated to me: Ahmad ibn Abī al-Hawārī narrated to us, saying: I heard Ibn Īsā and Abū Safwān say, “Whoever loves a man but fails to fulfill his rights is insincere.” He said: I related this to Abū Sulaymān, who replied with words to this effect: “He may be sincere in his love for him yet remiss in fulfilling his rights. He loved him only for Allah’s sake.”
