223 — Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Tamīmī and Ahmad ibn Abd al-A‘lā al-Shaybānī narrated to us, from Abdullāh ibn Ja‘far ibn Abī Tālib (may Allah be pleased with him), that while on a journey, he passed by some young men who were kindling a fire beneath their cooking pot. One of them rose and approached him, saying:
[Mutaqārib meter]
When I came upon him, I said to him:
“Peace be upon you, Abū Ja‘far.”
Abdullāh stopped and replied, “And peace be upon you, together with Allah’s mercy and blessings.” The young man then said:
These clothes of mine are worn threadbare;
harsh times have sunk their teeth into me.
Abdullāh said, “Then these clothes of mine shall take their place, and we shall help you against your harsh times.” He was wearing a robe of khazz, a bordered mantle of khazz, and a turban of khazz, all of which he gave to him. The young man then said:
You are the noble one of Banū Hāshim,
and from that House comes the one whom we remember.
He replied, “My nephew, that is the Messenger of Allah,” and continued on his way.
