215 — Al-Mufaddal ibn Ghassān narrated to us, from his father, from a man, who said: “Al-Hasan al-Basrī had a house whose open door constituted his permission to enter. A Bedouin came, found the door open, and entered while al-Hasan was in the privy. He found something beneath al-Hasan’s bed, took it out, and began eating. Al-Hasan looked at him and began to weep. He was asked, ‘Why are you weeping, Abū Saʿīd?’ He replied, ‘This reminded me of the character of a people who have passed away.’”
