182 — Abū Hafs al-Sayrafī narrated to me: Alī ibn Bazī al-Hilālī narrated to me, from Matar al-Warrāq, who said: “One day, I went to Muhammad ibn Wāsi. When he saw me, he lowered his head between his knees and covered his face so that I could not look at him. He did not raise his head, so I got up and left. A few days later, he came to me with a purse containing seven hundred dirhams and handed it to me while I was in my shop at Qantarat Harra. I said, ‘Send for me whenever you need anything.’ He replied, ‘What need could I have? You came to me, and I thought that you were in need, so I could not bring myself to look at you.’ Matar said: “I told him, ‘I am well provided for.’ He replied, ‘Do as you please; the dirhams will not come back to me.’”
