Al-IkhwanIbn Abi al-Dunya

109 — Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Īsā al-Tamīmī al-Basrī related to me, on the authority of al-Walīd ibn Hishām al-Qahdhamī, who recited to him:

[The Wāfir meter]

You visited me but seldom, thus earning my companionship—
By your Lord, what a welcome sight you brought anew!

But once I gave you my affection, pure and true,
You made your two visits a debt that I must pay.

I will not remain where I am humiliated,
Even if love for you becomes a debt I bear.

The Prophet said—and righteous was he—
“When you visit a friend, visit him at intervals.”

So visit less often the one you love; thereby
You will grow dearer and more beloved to the one you visit.
