107 — Al-Hasan ibn Ahmad recited to me the following by one of the poets:
[The Kāmil meter]
If you desire lasting ties, visit at intervals;
Your friends will only love you more.
Never make a habit of frequenting a friend,
Even though he freely grants you his affection;
For one day his courtyard may prove too cramped for you,
Though once it had been broad and welcoming.
Let no young man dart away from his tether
And become a dog within a guarded preserve,
Whose people make his lot among them
Nothing but hunger and blows.
Keep your distance from a friend;
Distance from him will bring you nearer.
