94 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Yunus⦗81⦘ ibn Bukayr told me; he said: My father related to me from ʿUbayd ibn … … , from Wahb ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Kaʿb ibn Sūr, who said:
Muhammad ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah once entered a bathhouse and found ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Muljam sitting there. He looked at him and asked, “Where is the man from?”
Ibn Muljam replied, “From Egypt.”
Muhammad asked, “From which people there?”
He answered, “From Yemen.”
Muhammad continued, “From which branch of it are you?”
He said, “I am not going to tell you.” So Muhammad left him.
When the affair with ʿAli unfolded and he was killed, ʿAbd al-Rahman was seized and confined in a house. Muhammad came in to see him and said, “Are you not the man from the bathhouse?”
He replied, “Yes.”
Muhammad said, “By Allah, I do not recognize you today any more than I recognized you that day!” Then he turned to the people with him and said, “We do not claim knowledge of the unseen, but we did learn something, so we acted on what we knew.”
