The place of ʿAlī’s burial—may Allah have mercy on him
80 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; my father—may Allah have mercy on him—narrated to me, from Hishām ibn Muḥammad. He said: Abū Bakr ibn ʿAyyāsh told me, “I questioned Abū Ḥuṣayn, ʿĀṣim ibn Bahdala, al-Aʿmash, and others, asking, ‘Has anyone informed you that he led the funeral prayer over ʿAlī or that he witnessed his burial?’ They replied, ‘No.’ So I asked your father, Muḥammad ibn al-Sāʾib, and he said, ‘He was taken out at night; al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn, Ibn al-Ḥanafiyyah, ʿAbd Allah ibn Jaʿfar, and several members of their household escorted him and buried him on the outskirts of Kufa.’ I asked your father, ‘Why did they do that?’ He answered, ‘They feared the Khārijites—or others—might exhume him.’”
