The washing, shrouding, funeral prayer, and burial of ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him

77 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; ʿAmr ibn Hāshim Abū Mālik al-Janabī narrated from Ismāʿīl ibn Abī Khālid, from ʿĀmir, that ʿAlī instructed Ḥasan to wash him and said, “Do not be extravagant with the shroud, for I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Do not be extravagant with the shroud, for it is stripped away swiftly.’ When you carry me, walk at a pace between the two extremes—neither too fast nor too slow. If it is something good, you will have hastened me toward it; and if it is something bad, you will have cast it from your shoulders.”
