57 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Hārūn ibn Maʿrūf narrated to us; Jarīr ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, from al-Aʿmash, from Sālim ibn Abī al-Jaʿd, from ʿAbd Allah ibn Sabīʿ, who said: It was said to ʿAli, “Will you not appoint a successor, O Commander of the Believers?” He replied, “No. I shall leave you as the Messenger of Allah left you.” They asked, “What will you say when you meet Allah?” He answered, “I will say: ‘O Allah, You kept me among them for as long as You wished, then You took me to Yourself and I have left them in Your care. If You will, You may lead them astray, and if You will, You may set them right.’”
