42 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allāh narrated to us; my father—may Allah have mercy on him—told me, from Hishām ibn Muḥammad, from Abū Janāb al-Kalbī, from Abū ʿAwn al-Thaqafī, from Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī, who said:
When death approached ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, he made a testament to his son al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī, saying:
“My son, I advise you to fear Allah, to establish the prayer, to give the zakat at its proper time, to perfect your ablution and persevere in keeping it, for there is no prayer without purification, and prayer is not accepted from one who withholds the zakat. I counsel you to seek forgiveness for sin, to suppress your anger, to maintain kinship ties, to be forbearing toward the ignorant, ⦗49⦘ to deepen your understanding of the religion, to act with deliberation, to keep regular company with the Quran, to treat the neighbor well, to enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and to avoid every shameful deed—in short, to keep away from anything in which Allah is disobeyed.”
