Maqtal 'AliIbn Abi al-Dunya

39 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Yaḥyā al-Qurashī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿīd, from Ziyād ibn ʿAbd Allah, who said that Mujālid reported:

A man of the Kindah tribe, who was a physician, was summoned for ʿAlī. He asked for a lung, cut from it a delicate strip that still contained its vein, blew it up, and slid it into the wound. When he pulled it out, part of the brain was clinging to it. He then said, “Commander of the Believers, set your affairs in order; someone in your condition cannot be treated.”

At that ʿAlī declared, “If I die, kill him, for a life is requited with a life; but if I live, I shall decide what to do.”
