29 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated. He said: al-Mundhir ibn ʿAmmār al-Kāhilī related to us; he said: Ibn Abī al-Hathḥāth al-ʿIjlī told me, from his father, who said:
ʿAlī went out in the small hours before dawn to wake the people for prayer. Ibn Muljam met him carrying a short sword and recited, “And among mankind is he who sells his own self, seeking Allah’s pleasure; and Allah is ever kind to His servants” (Q 2:207). Thinking the man only wished to begin the recitation, ʿAlī replied, “O you who believe, enter into peace wholeheartedly” (Q 2:208). At that moment Ibn Muljam struck him on the crown of the head with the sword.
