2- … Abu Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā informed us; ʿAbbās ibn Hishām informed us, from his father, who said: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf was given the pledge of allegiance in Madinah on a Friday, twelve nights remaining in Dhū al-Ḥijjah, after the slaying of ʿUthmān. Thus Muḥarram of the year 36 AH opened under his caliphate. Someone other than ʿAbbās related that the pledge was first taken in the house of ʿAmr ibn Muḥṣin ⦗24⦘ al-Anṣārī, a member of Banū Mabdhūl, on that Friday, and that the public pledge was renewed the next day—Saturday—in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah, ﷺ. His kunyah was Abū al-Ḥasan.
