28 – Al-Ḥusayn narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah narrated. He said: Al-ʿAbbās ibn Hishām ibn ⦗40⦘ Muḥammad related to me, from his father, from Abū al-Muqawwam Yaḥyā ibn Thaʿlabah al-Anṣārī, from ʿAbd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr, who said:
When Ibn Muljam was brought before ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with him—on the morning after the blow, his daughter Umm Kulthūm was sitting at his bedside weeping. The moment she caught sight of Ibn Muljam she fell silent and then said, “Enemy of Allah, by Allah the Commander of the Faithful is in no danger!”
He retorted, “Indeed, by Allah, I honed the sword, rejected injustice, cast off fear, urged myself on, and dealt him a blow which, had it fallen upon Rabiʿah and Muḍar, would have annihilated them. And it is for ʿAlī that you are weeping!”
