20 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn Ṣafwān al-Bardhaʿī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī al-Dunyā narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī narrated to us; he said: Ziyād ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Bakkāʾī narrated to us, on the authority of ʿAwānah ibn al-Ḥakam al-Kalbī:
Quṭām said to Ibn Muljam, “Your preparations are complete—now carry it through.”
So Ibn Muljam went out until he reached the mosque, while Quṭām pitched her pavilion inside the mosque and dressed him in his weapons. ʿAlī emerged calling, “The prayer, the prayer, O people!” Ibn Muljam struck him on the forehead with his sword, but the blade hit the wall and was notched. He then threw down the sword and said to the people, “Beware of the sword, for it is poisoned.” It is alleged that he had been poisoning it for a full month. Ibn Muljam was seized, and ʿAlī was taken into his house.
