19 – Al-Ḥusayn ibn Ṣafwān al-Bardhaʿī narrated to us; ʿAbd Allah ibn Abī al-Dunyā narrated to us; Saʿīd ibn Yaḥyā narrated to us; he said: ʿAbd Allah ibn Saʿīd al-Umawī narrated to us, from Ziyād ibn ʿAbd Allah al-Bakkāʾī, from ʿAwānah ibn al-Ḥakam al-Kalbī, who said:
Muzāḥim ibn Zafar al-Taymī related to me, on the authority of Wajīh, that Ibn Muljam would sit among his people from the dawn prayer until the sun had risen high; the others would be chatting, while he did not utter a single word. I was also told that one day he was sitting in the marketplace, sword at his side, when a funeral procession passed by in which both Muslims and Christian priests were present. He cried out, “Woe to you! What is this?” ⦗34⦘ They replied, “It is Abjar ibn Jābir Abū Ḥijār al-ʿAjlī and his son Sayyid of Bakr ibn Wāʾil. The Muslims are following because of the son, and the Christians because the father was a Christian.” Ibn Muljam said, “By Allah, were I not sparing myself for something whose reward with Allah is greater than this, I would have cut him down with my sword.”
