[His Merits and His Martyrdom]

1- Muhammad ibn Shujaʿ informed us; Abu ʿAmr ibn Manda informed us; al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad informed us; Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ʿUmar informed us; Abu Bakr ibn Abī al-Dunyā informed us; Muhammad ibn Saʿd said: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib ibn ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib ibn Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Quṣayy—whose kunyah was Abū al-Ḥasan, and whose mother was Fāṭimah bint Asad ibn Hāshim ibn ʿAbd Manāf ibn Quṣayy—was killed, may Allah have mercy on him, in Kūfah at dawn on Friday, the seventeenth night of Ramadan in the year 40 AH. He was sixty-three years old, though some say he was in his late fifties. He was buried in Kūfah near the congregational mosque within the governor’s palace. The man who carried out his assassination was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Muljam al-Murādī. ʿAlī also transmitted hadith from Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq.
